Summary

When I moved to Austria in August 2024, I quickly realized there was no strong or consistent English-speaking channels. No clear place to find relevant tips, cultural insights, or simply feel connected. So, I decided to build one myself — from the ground up.

I launched a website, an Instagram account, FB page and a TikTok page dedicated to English-speaking internationals (and locals!) living in Austria.

Goal

The goal was to create a relatable, informative, and friendly space that combines useful content with a sense of belonging.

I wanted to challenge myself, so my SMARTer goal was to get a steady traffic to the website, at least 1000 people a month,

10 000 followers on TikTok by the end of the year and 7000 on Instagram (in just 3 months).

The process

Plan. Before anything else, I fully developed the community concept. Initially, I shaped the foundation:

• Developed clear user personas

• Mapped out key audience pain points and desires

• Defined tone of voice, topics, and content pillars

• I crafted a detailed editorial plan

Social media. Once the concept was in place, I launched the Instagram and TikTok accounts. These platforms became the starting points for reaching and engaging with the audience, testing content formats, and validating messaging in real time.

Website. The website came next. I built it using Webflow, which allowed for quick and flexible development. The process took around 19 days. I started with a ready-made template, but quickly realized it needed technical tweaks. To solve those, I hired developers to adjust parts of the theme that I couldn’t modify myself. Their support helped tailor the structure exactly to what the project needed.

I designed the site and branding myself — from layout and UX decisions to visual direction. Whenever needed, I reached out to designer friends for help with finer design details and polish.

Logo and naming. I went through two logo iterations. Initially, the brand was called Corner, but over time we realized it didn’t fully reflect the community’s mission. “Corner Austria” also sounded too abstract and not specific enough. So, I reworked the naming and visual identity to better align with the project’s values and audience and now it's "oida Austria".

Results

oida Austria gained rapid traction on both TikTok and Instagram.

Today, I can confidently say that oida Austria has become the leading English-speaking media platform in the country, especially among the expat community.

As of August 27, 2025, the project has grown to over 120,000 followers across social media, with a monthly reach of 5 million+ and hundreds of active website visitors.

Right now, my focus is on building meaningful partnerships with local brands across Austria to continue growing and bringing even more value to the international community here.
